He wasborn in Lincolnshire, England, in 1579. When he wasa boy of thirteen, he sold his school-books and satchel,meaning to run away to sea. Then his father died sud-no VIRGINIA. denly; and he decided that he ought to stay at homCcBut he was wiUing to stay only two years; after which. he left England, went smiths ^ , ^^ , travels and to France and Hol- adventures land, and fought in vari-ous armies for severalyears. After-wards he went to fight against the Turks ; and, duringa long siege, a certain Turkish officer requested thatsome Christian officer would meet him in single com-bat to amuse the accepted the chal-lenge, and killed not onlythis officer, but two othersin succession.
