A landscape front view of the Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Southern Iceland


The narrow, 60m high Seljalandfoss Waterfall, tumbling over the cliffs along Southern Iceland's former coastline, is a result of isostatic uplift of the land. The release of billions of tonnes of ice weight at the end of the Ice Age over 10,000 years ago caused the land, formerly depressed by the ice weight, to 'spring up' or emerge from the sea. As the turbulent water in the plunge pool at the base of the fall continues to scour into the cliff cut away its base, the cliff-face, in time, will collapse and the waterfall retreat upstream.
