THE breaking of the day of the 17th revealed the Fifth Corps,in support of the Ninth Corps, on the battlefield of Peters-burg. Burnside had already moved to the attack on theRebel line, capturing guns and prisoners. The battle continued with severity until the afternoon, whenthe Ninth, supported by the Fifth Corps, drove the rebels into theinner lines near the city.
