In fact, one wouldnot be far wrong in assigning a particular significance, in the productionof receptors, to Just those organs which show unimportant vital response,because in such tissues the injurious effects of thetoxophore group are absent or of such diminishedimportance that the regenerative powers of suchtissues are not retarded. The presence or absence of receptors capableof binding the toxine, as well as their number anddistribution, are factors which determine the sus-ceptibility of different species of animals to thevarious toxines.
