As regards direct polarization, the results of the different chemists, consider-ing the variations of temperature, etc., under which the work was performed,show a fairly uniform agreement with each method of clarification. The per-centages of sucrose by the Clerget method, however, show extremely widevariations. These are due, no doubt, partly to differences in the method of in-version and also to variation in dilution of the inverted solution, which wasalways darker. There is probably no determination where the element of per-sonal error or equation is more evident than in the Clerget method for fact and the numerous inherent errors in the method has led Koydl o, ina recent article, to recommend the complete abandonment of the Clergetprocess in
