This tapers somewhat to the point ofunion with the tail. This so-called tail is a thread-like posterior portion andis approximately 45 microns in length. In the freshly voided semen these tailportions show active undulatory whip-like motions, which persist for 24 to48 hours, and even longer under proper conditions, and enable the spermatozoato progress from point to point. Alkalies seem to favor this movement, whiledilute acids inliibit it very rapidly. This movement of the spermatozoa isclosely associated with their sexual activity, as the cells showing no movement. \ Fig. 114.—Normal semen. when freshly voided may be regarded as possessing no functional a discussion of spermatogenesis as well as of fertilization of the ovumthe writer would refer to the admirable description of McMurrich.^ Besides these characteristic portions of the semen, large numbers oflecithin globules are seen, which give the milky appearance to the fluid. Espe-cially to be noted among the cellular elements are the so-called corpora amylaceawhich resemble very closely starch granules, having concentric striations, afinely granular center and occasionally a nucleus. These cells take a distinctblue color on treatment with iodin solution. Moreover, various epithelial ^ The Development of the Human Body, Philadelphia, 1907. ^(),\ IHA(;N()Sri( MElllODH.
