Total knee replacement. Frontal X-ray of the components of a prosthetic knee implant (centre) used to replace the right knee joint of an 86-year-old woman. This is a total knee replacement operation. The lower part of the implant forms the weight-bearing surface in the lower leg. The upper part caps the thigh bone (femur) and articulates with the other part of the implant. This operation is usually carried out to treat a condition such as osteoarthritis. Here, the patient is in a supine (lying down) position. Screws have been used to fix the lower part of the implant due to demineralisation of the bone.
