William Cowper (1731-1800) English poet, born at Great Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, and settled at Olney, Buckinghamshire. A poet of the evangelical revival and of Nature, with John Newton, the curate at Olney, he published the "Olney Hymns" (1779).
