At the back of the main building, afterpassing through a couple of small but pretty courts,we reached a charming retreat, a large, fine, lofty,well-proportioned room, giving on a pleasaunceof beautifully kept and probably very old trees inpots, all curled and gnarled and twisted and bar-becued in the most approved fashion, with some 344 TRAVELS IN NORTH AND CENTRAL CHINA. very fine specimens of the adiantum or maidenhair-leaved tree among them. Visible through theirfoliage was the long white wall, with tiled roof-cap,on the central space of which were great pic-turesquely writ black characters, probably someapposite saying of some Chinese philosopher. In an outbuilding of the temple were stowed away30 taels-worth (about £4 13s.) of houses, servants,horses, chairs, etc., all made of paper, represent
