These Inhalations are derived from the smokearising from the ignition of unsized paper, steepedin a solution of nitrate of Fig. 2. the fuming inhaler. Though the value of fuming Inhalations has longbeen recognised both by physicians and patients, the 92 FORMULAE—FUMI. remedy has not hitherto been placed on a scientificbasis. This is now done by requiring the papers tobe steeped in solutions of definite strength, and bymodifying their effects by the addition of variousvolatile principles. This form of inhalation is recommended in casesof spasmodic dyspnoea, especially when dependenton asthmatic complications, or on spasm of theabductors of the vocal chords. The method of using the papers is as follows:—A strip is lit at one end and dropped into acylindrical vessel (Fig. 2), about 4 inches high, andof a diameter of 2 inches.
