New Zealand Memorial for the soldiers that died during the Battle of Broodseinde on 4 October 1917 in Zonnebeke, Belgium
The New Zealand Memorial is a war memorial in Passchendaele, which belongs to the West Flemish municipality of Zonnebeke, near the 's-Graventafelstraat in the hamlet of' s-Graventafel. The memorial commemorates the activities of the New Zealand troops during the Third Battle of Ypres from 4 to 12 October 1917, during which great losses were suffered. After this date they were relieved by Canadian troops. On August 1, 1924, this monument was unveiled in the presence of some New Zealand dignitaries. It consists of a kind of obelisk on a plinth, made of white natural stone, located on a platform in the middle of a park. The text on the monument reads: This monument marks the site of Gravenstafel which, on October the 4th 1917 was captured by the New Zealand Division as part of a general advance towards Passchendaele.
