Palm Sunday: the colt or foal of an adult donkey walks behind its parent as it carries Jesus Christ through streets of Jerusalem lined with his celebrating supporters. Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: the colt or foal of an adult donkey follows its parent as it carries Jesus Christ through cheering crowds welcoming his arrival in Jerusalem on Palm Sunday. This square close detail of a Romanesque stone capital, sculpted in about 1190 AD, illustrates one of the New Testament Gospel accounts of Christ’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem at the start of the Holy Week or Passion Week that would culminate in his arrest, crucifixion and entombment, followed by his resurrection on Easter Sunday. While all four writers of the New Testament Gospels describe Jesus riding into Jerusalem astride a donkey, Matthew is the only one to mention the involvement of two animals, with the disciples at first unsure whether to lay their cloaks across the back of the adult donkey or its foal. According to Matthew, they draped their cloaks over both animals. The artwork is on one of the 20 capitals in the monastery cloister carved by an artist known as the Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Agüero. They portray biblical stories from the Creation to Christ’s Ascension and when viewed together, were intended to symbolise a New Jerusalem. The Benedictine monastery was founded under a bulging rock overhang in the Central Pyrenees by hermit monks fleeing the 10th century expansion in the Moorish occupation of Spain. It stands on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
