Fig. 38. interrupter on account of its simplicity and theoreticalinterest; it possesses, however, even now, in spite ofsome technical imperfections and drawbacks, some markedadvantages over other forms of break, so that we maysafely predict for it an important position amongst inter-rupters for X-ray work, if only we succeed in producingtubes which will stand the resulting strain. Thanks tothe immense number of interruptions which it yields, thecharacter of the discharge between the ends of the second-ary is unlike any other spark discharge; instead of a 82 Practical Radiography single spark or even a stream of sparks we obtain by itsmeans a veritable torrent of sparks, which—at shorter gap-lengths—develops into a flaming discharge, indicative ofgreat energy.
