These cars are somewhat similarni their general construction to the 7S-ton (lat car built by theLake Shore & Micliigan Southern in 1907,* and are constructedentirely of structural shapes and specially designed steel continuous fish-belly sills form the load-carrying membersof the underframe. These are in each case girders witli y. plates and having flanges formed by angles. The ccntersillsare 13J4 in. deep from the end sill to a point beyond the bolstersand 29 in. deep for 6 ft. at the center. The two sills are spaced12^ in. apart. The angles forming the flanges at both the topand the bottom are 5 in. .x iy. in. x 9/16 in. This providesa sectional area for tlie center sills of sq. in. The innerangle at the liottom is discontinued at the inner edge of kJ/l-^- 10^- ■J/ik-^JS Pedestal for 100-Ton Capacity Car. v—zo-A but is continued beyond tlie bolster to the rear draft lugs. Theother three angles extend continuously through the bolster to thedraft lugs. The flanges of the side sills are formed of 6 in. x4 in. X 9/16 in. angles on the inside of the plate with the flangesextending outward and of 5 in. x 3 in. x y. in. angles on the out-side of the plate with their outwardly extending flanges abuttingand riveted to the inner angles. The construction is the sameat both tlie top and bottom of the sills. This gives a cross-sectional area of about sq. in. in each side sill, or a total forthe 4 longitudinal of about 129 sq. in. Near the center are three sets of built-up cross bearers ordiaphragms which are fitted between and secured to the centerand side sills. That portion of the cross bearer between thecenter sills consists of steel castings. A ><-in. cover plate ofthe shape shown in the illustrati
