. Indian cotton. 28 per 100 viss., andthe highest sale price was 5fd. per lb. in Europe. A rough calcula-tion of the profit would be as follows :— 100 viss = 3601bs., ginning outturn at 32 per cent., there-fore 115201bs. lint cost Rs. 28 = 389d. per the cost of ginning and packing on the very liberalrate of Rs. 7-8-0 per 100 viss for ginning, and Rs. 5 per bale of4001bs. for packing, which are much above the rates in vogue inIndia, and include a handsome profit on these processes, we get anadditional £d. for expenses. Shipping and freight to Englandamount to less than |d. per lb

Shipping and freight to Englandamount to less than |d. per lb. The value of the cotton seed isRs. 21 for the quantity necessary to produce 4001bs. lint. Thecalculation works out, therefore as follows : — Cost of cotton at gin 389d. per lb. Ginning and baling 53d. per lb. Freight to Europe 40d. per lb. 482d. per lb. in value of seed 84d. 3-98d. per lb. Selling price in Europe 538d. per lb. Net profit VAOcL, or 29 per cent, on outlay. 200 INDIAN INDIAN COTTON. 201 The bulk of the crop was bought by the combine at Rs. 23 per100 viss, or 694d. per lb. less than above. Some members of the com-bine maintain that at present they cannot sell at more than 5d., oreven less, nevertheless, the profit is an extremely handsome one. Dis-cussions with the partners of the various European concerns showthat the low prices obtained were for cotton shipped to England, whilst the same type sent to the Continent not only had a readiersale, but sold at higher rates. This is quite reasonable, as thedemand in Lancashire for Indian cotton is very limited.
