Before the tunnel was finished thequestion of ventilation liecame urgent, and at the suggestion of the GeneralElectric Company it was proposed thatelectric locomotives should be used in-. only a possibility but in their particularcase a necessity. When the great tunnel was builtthrough the heart of Baltimore underHoward street, one of its principalthoroughfares, the question arose asto what would be the best method ofventilating the subterranean passagewithout sinking vertical shafts throughthe cellars of houses or in the streetalong its line. The tunnel is the longest soft earth stead of steam locomotives, and therebykeeping the air in the tunnel free from theusual coal gases. The experiment wasfirst tried witli a sixty-seven ton electriclocomotive and proved successful. Theresult was the building of a magnificentpowerhouse and the placing of an orderfor three Combination Schenectady En-gines, to be built with electrical appli-ances furnished b) the General ElectricCompany. These electric locomotivesare not only operated through the tun-
