Close up view of the head portrait sculpture of Abe Abraham Lincoln at Mt Mount Rushmore National Memorial Monument
Closeup view of the sculpted head of Abraham Lincoln. Detail of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills at Keystone near Rapid City South Dakota. Sculptors: Gutzon Borglum and his son Lincoln Borglum. Construction of the monument started in 1927. The face of Abraham Lincoln was finished in 1937 and dedicated on September 17. Sculptor Gutzon Borglum died March 1941. Construction was stopped in October 1941 and the sculpture left unfinished due to lack of funding: the original model shows the presidents from the waist up. The site is managed by the National Park Service and draws 3 million visitors each year. Mount Rushmore is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
