The transverse diameter of the pelvicoutlet can be: measured directly with ease. The woman is placedin the dorsal posture, with thighs and legs flexed. The distancebetween the tuberosities of the ischia is measured with a pel-. If it should be desired to measure the anteroposterior diam-eter of the pelvic outlet, this may be done as is shown in figure283, centimeters being subtracted for the thickness of boneand superimposed structures. Or, the extended first and secondfinder of the left hand may measure the distance from the loweredge of the symphysis pubis to the tip of the sacrum. 4. Description of the Several Varieties of Abnormalitiesin the Female Pelvis.—The simple flat pelvis (Fig. 282) is theearliest recognized form of contracted pelvis—the pelvis planaof Deventer, who did not, however, make a distinction betweenthe simple flat and the rachitic flat pelvis. It is doubtful, indeed,if he knew the differencebetween the two. Betschlerwas the first to point out thedistinctive features
