Fruit has been raisedsuccessfully, and is now the leading industry of the quantities of pears, plums, cherries, grapes, and ber-ries are annually produced, and are of excellent by the river, with but little land-carriage, theyreach the city markets in fine condition. This class of fruitexceeds the apple crop, though the latter is good. There are no manufacturing enterprises of any import-ance in town. It is a tradition of the people that, throughsome management of other interested parties, the originalintended grant of ten thousand acres was changed to six.
