First steps were taken toward the formationof the regiment at a meeting held on August , and on September 8 organization waseffected. The regiment was composed largely ofCivil War veterans. The famous EllsworthZouaves joined in a body as Company G. The regiment saw its first active service in 1875. It was called out forriot duty on February 12. During the railroad riots and the coal minersstrike at Braidwood, July 26 to 31, 1877, it again was sent into the field.
