The Eastern Shan State is accessible by road from northern Thailand, an exception to Burma's usual stringent ban on foreigners entering by land. The Eng are a very small minority community encountered in the hills surrounding Kengtung, northeast Burma, near the Thai, Chinese and Lao frontiers.
