Frau von Fritsch was stoned when she showedherself in the streets; a novel experience for her,no doubt, for, although she was an adept stone-thrower herself, I am sure this was the first timein her life that she had ever been the recipientof tangible missiles. George von Metzsch was warned by^anonym-ous letters to keep out of sight, for if he fell intothe hands of the mob he would be at once tornto pieces. It is universally known that divorce is notrecognised by the Roman Catholic Church, andas no Austrian archduchess is ever marriedcivilly, it was somewhat difficvilt for my father-in-law and his advisers to find a way out of theimpasse. Divorce proceedings were eventuallybased on the document signed by my father andthe Emperor of Austria; and that, and the Deedof Renunciation, were the only written evidencesof a marriage-contract. A special case was,therefore, arranged on those lines, and a divorcewas pronounced without the sanction of myfather or the Emperor. The clauses weremodelled on those of ordinary divorce petitions,which could not, of cotirse, apply to membersof the Imperial House of Austria, who are notunder the jurisdiction of any court.
