Sulfur dioxide molecular model with piece of coal


In the US more than 50% of electricity is generated by the combustion of coal. Worldwide it is the leading source as well. Containing sulfur deposits, coal produces sulfur dioxide when burned which converts to sulfuric acid in the atmosphere causing acid rain.
