Walking along the dunes at Sossusvlei in the heart of the Namib Desert, Namibia, Southern Africa at dawn.
The dunes at Sossusvlei, in the Namib Desert in Namibia are best visited at dawn or dusk when the sand glows orange-red. At these times, photography is immensly rewarding. It is claimed that the dunes are the highest in the world. Most visitors either stay at the nearby wilderness camp or in Sesriem (an hour's drive away). A 'vlei' is a shallow depression which is sometimes filled with water, although here that's rare. Sossusvlei though covers a larger area - not just the vlei but the surrounding and seemingly endless steep mountains of sand.
