The World Heritage listed Sanahin Monastery, built in the 10th century, in the Debed Canyon, Armenia is the oldest Christian nation on earth, adopting the religious affirmation in 301 AD after then ruler, King Tiridates III, was cured of madness by patron saint Gregory the Illuminator. Midway between Armenia’s capital, Yerevan, and Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, which adopted Christianity a few decades later, the Debed Canyon flourished as a centre for bible study. Two of the most important monasteries, Sanahin and Haghpat, are now World Heritage listed.
