Old refrigerators, fridges await recycling at the temporary storage site of Greystone Quarry, Southerham Pit near Lewes East Sussex England UK. 2003

A mountain of old refrigerators lies hidden in the shadows of the South Downs. The 40-foot, quarter-mile long pile containing about 70,000 fridges has been created at Southerham Pit near Lewes, East Sussex. European Union directives dictate that the appliances have to be recycled to remove harmful CFC gases. A £2 million “fridge eater” machine recycles 90% of the fridges after the chemicals have been removed.
