‘Polaris’, a long-range autonomous underwater vehicle developed by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, awaits retrieval by a Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew and transport into nearby Buzzards Bay for testing, Falmouth, Mass., Thursday, April 15, 2021. WHOI partnered with the Coast Guard in order to safely deploy the submersible, which is capable of rapid response to an environmental threat and can measure the chemical and physical properties of water in remote and hard-to-reach regions such as an oil spill in ice-covered waters.
