Old trees display the vener- able characteristics that people strive for in bonsai. A heavy tapering trunk, for example, gives the impression of strength and grace. Visible surface roots show a strong grip on the earth and drooping branches suggest age. Rugged form also suggests age and old scars tell many stories.
