It is under better con-trol than the Bessemer process, since at any time it affordsopportunity for testing and for making such additions HAND FORGING AND WELDING 391 as may be necessary to yield the desired product. Theopen hearth furnace also permits of the highest tempera-ture without requiring a strong draft. These furnacesare built to hold from ten to fifty tons of metal.
