Smith-Putnam wind turbine. This wind turbine was the world's first large (megawatt-size) turbine. It was completed in 1941 on a hill named Grandpa's Knob in Rutland, Vermont, USA. The blades had a radius of 27 metres, on a tower 36 metres high. It supplied power to the local grid during World War II before failing in 1943 and then failing a final time in 1945. The largest wind turbine built prior to 1979, it was rated at megawatts in winds of about 50 kilometres per hour. It was named for its designer Palmer Cosslett Putnam, and its manufacturer, the S. Morgan Smith Company. Photographed circa 1941.
