In the field ofreligious architecture, on the other hand, the Saxon age accomplishedvery important results, not merely in regard to the great mass ofnew buildings and enlargements, but also with reference to thedevelopment of larger dimensions, more ingenious combinations, andricher ornamentation. Of course this applies especially to theSaxon churches and cloisters. It is enough toremind the reader of Quedlinburg, Pöhlde, (jrona,Duderstadt, and Enger, where probably the Em-press Matilda acted as builder; of the splendidscale on which the monastery of Fulda, destroyedby fire in 937, was rebuilt; and of the erection ofthe Cath
