Housefly eye. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the eye of a common housefly (Musca domestica). The junction between three lenses, called ommatidia, is seen here. Each ommatidium is a simple eye that sends a signal to the fly's brain. The brain combines the thousands of images to form a mosaic view of the world. The image is not sharp but is excellent at detecting movement. Magnification: x8,300 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
