He was the last of the foundersof the Constitution of the UnitedStates to be called to his eternalreward. The Madison family were amongthe early emigrants to the New World,landing upon the°shores of the Chesa-peake but 15 years after the settle-ment of Jamestown. The father ofJames Madison was an opulentplanter, residing upon a very fine es-tate called Montpelier, Orange Co.,Va. The mansion was situated inthe midst of scenery highly pictur-esque and romantic, on the west sideof South-west Mountain, at the foot ofBlue Ridge. It was but 25 miles from the home ofJefferson at Monticello. The closest personal andpolitical attachment existed between these illu
