All these bones afford areasfor muscle attachments. Dissection.—Make the skin incisions 1, 2, and 3of Figure 8, and reflect lateral flaps as the dissection of the anterior of the thigh hasbeen made, the skin may be dissected off. 1. Subcutaneous Tissue.—This tissueis thicker and denser than that of the ante-rior of the thigh ; the veins and nerves are | much smaller and less numerous. Dissection.—Clear away the subcutaneous tissuefrom the fascia, preserving, as far as possible, the subcutaneous nerves andveins. 2. Subcutaneous Werves, Plate 92.—Branches of the ex-ternal cutaneous nerve, from the lumbar plexus (page 109 ;. 164 LOWER EXTREMITY. Plate 60), wind over the outer border of the thigh. Branchesof the small sciatic nerve perforate the fascia, in the outer andinner halves of the posterior region of the thigh ; branches ofthe latter nerve also wind over the inferior border of the glu-teus maximus muscle, to ramify superiorly. Terminal branchesof the twelfth dorsal, the ilio-hypogastric and the lumbar spinalnerves enter the gluteal region at its superior limit ; posteriorbranches of the sacral spinal nerves appear near the medianline. 3. Fascia Lata.—The posterior portion of the fascia lataforms the fascial plane of the gluteal region and the posteriorregion of the thigh ; its anterior portion, with which the pos-terior is continuous, was before described (page 109) and illus-trated (Plate 60). Dissection.—Abduct the limb, so as to bring the inner side of
