But the spell was broken in 1871. EllingCarlsen, a Norwegian captain, who had been engagedin the North Sea trade for eighteen years, sailed fromHammerfest on the 16th of May, in a sloop of sixtytons, called the Solid. He reached the Ice Havenof Barentz September 7th, and on the 9th saw a housestanding at the head of the bay. The materials hadevidently belonged to a ship, and among them wereseveral oak beams. Round the house were standingseveral large puncheons, and there were also heaps of:reindeer, seal, bear, and walrus bones. The interior isdescribed by Captain Carlsen exactly as representedin the curious old draw
