Warning sign of high surf conditions at El Porto Beach in Manhattan Beach California A High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flood Watch occured on the west facing beaches of southern California at the end of December 2005 and beginning of January 2006 High surf advisory means beaches will be affected with very strong rip currents and local beach erosion A coastal Flood Watch is called when coastal flooding is expected to develop especially at high tide Coastal residents need to be alert and take action to protect their property Risks associated with water related activities are extreme such as strong rip currents and require caution when enterting the ocean Waves from 5 to 8 feet higher than normal were possible Earlier in December waves near 20 feet were experience near San Diego with one surfer being killed
