THE ILEO-COLIC ARTERY AND ITS BRANCHES. The ileo-colic artery, as it approaches the angle of junctionof the ileum with the ascending colon, gives off as a rule fivebranches (Fig. 23). The precise mode of origin of these THE ILEO-COLIC ARTERY AND ITS BRANCHES 75 branches may vary within considerable limits. Perhaps themost frequent arrangement is for the vessel to divide intotwo main trunks, which subsequently split up, the anteriorinto two, and the posterior into three, branches. Theanterior branches are (i) a branch running to the left alongthe upper border of the ileum, and (2) a branch which con-tinues in the line of the ileo-colic artery over the ileo-colic. In a certain number of cases the largestbranch of this second vessel is a lateral one, which runs tothe right on to the ascending colon, forming in its course awell-defined curve with the concavity directed upwards andto the right. 76 THE CMCUM AND VERMIFORM APPENDIX The posterior branches are : (i) A branch running upwardsto anastomose with the right coKc artery ; (2) a branch whichruns to the posterior aspect of the angle of junction of theileum with the colon, distributing branches to the caecumand colon; and (3) the appendicular artery which runs behindthe ileum, in the meso-appendix, to the tip of the vermiform
