His son, thepresent Health Commissioner, wasgiven the advantages of a thoroughpublic school and university educa-tion, attending and in due course graduating from the Santa ClaraUniversity and the medical department of the University of Cali-fornia. His attainments and abilities were early recognized by the munici-pal authorities, and in 1895 he was appointed Health Officer for theDepartment of Public Health. From this period until 1902
