Ohio antique state map. Border excludes Toledo Strip. BUCHON, 1825

Artist/engraver/cartographer: Jean Alexandre Buchon. Provenance: Atlas géographique, statistique, historique et chronologique des Deux Amériques et des iles adjacentes; par Buchon, dédié à Le Duc d'Orléans, à Paris, à la librairie de J. Carez, éditeur, Rue Haute feuille, no 18; Chez Verdiere, Quai des Augustins, no 25; Chez Bossange, père, Rue de Richelieu, No. 60. MDCCCXXV. Type: Very decorative early 19th century antique hand-coloured engraved map. Text in French. The map shows the state territory limited at the pre-1835/36 Toledo War border with Michigan, to exclude the Toledo strip. Ohio's claims to the strip are also shown on the map. The dispute arose from conflicting earlier legislation. The dispute was resolved in Ohio's favour in 1836, with the strip being awarded to the state. In exchange for ceding the Toledo Strip, all of what is now known as the Upper Peninsula was included within Michigan's bounds when it was admitted into the Union in 1837.
