J.,and is the seventh in the family of ten childrenborn to John and Mary (Conkling) Littell. Hisfather was also a native of New Providence,where he was reared, and where for many )earshe was engaged in the mercantile business. Hewas also a surveyor, and did a great deal ofwork in that line in his native county. He wasquite a literary man, and in his political viewswas originally a Whig, hut afterwar
