IX RELIGION 335 The reason for this choice of a medium is said to havebeen the fact that a prince, Kungubu, took his sister towife, and had a son by her; the child was born at theplace Nakinzire, and the river Mayanja took its rise thereowing to the birth. The medium was thought to bepossessed by a leopard; he growled and rolled his eyesabout like an angry beast when under the influence of theleopard ghost. The victims were either clubbed or speared todeath at this sacrificial place. If they were tortured, theirflesh was cut off with splinters of reeds, which were sharpand cut like razors. The flesh was pinched up and cut offover the body, and the victim was afterwards killed.
