Leaving there he served as assistant priest for sev-eral months in New York City, and then was appointed tothe charge of a mission at Watertown, New York. In1851 he was made pastor of St. Johns Church, at Utica,New York. On March 14, 1858, he was consecratedBishop of Hartford, and like his two predecessors madeProvidence his home. When the new diocese of Providencewas created he removed to Hartford, where he engagedin the erection of a Cathedral, Episcopal Palace and Con-vent, and continued this work until his health failed.
