He studied the subject of baptism, and coming to thelight, w^as baptized in company with the converts. In 1866 hewas left motherless, and the year after he entered Harvard Uni-versity, from which he graduated in 1871. He spent a year in theGerman University, after which ho filled the position of tutorat Harvard for one year, and then he became pastor of the FirstBaptist Church, Charlestown, a port of Boston, Mass. Here heremained some four years, during which period he received into. MISSOURI ASSOCIATION. 121 the fellowship of the church about 400 members. From Charles-town he removed to St. Louis in June, 1877, and was at once in-stalled pastor of the Second Baptist Church. Under his pastor-ate the congregation has increased, and many have been addedto the church. He is a man of great energy, executive abilityand pulpit eloquence. During his administration the house of*worship has been twice built, owing to fire. In June, 1878,Shurtleff College, 111., conferred on him the honorary degree ofDoctor of Divinity.
