Afterfurther military training overseas, he wastransferred to the 12 7th Infantry, withwhich regiment he remained until se-verely wounded on October 14, 1918,by machine gun fire during the Argonnedrive, which caused his death five dayslater. He was promoted to a captaincy before his death. Captain Varney was unmarried. Besides his parents, Mr. and F. Varney, he is survived by four brothers and one sister, one brother.
