How should cannas be handled from the time they are taken out of the ground until they are again used in the spring. Our difficulty lies in our not being able to carry them through the winter properly and, therefore, we lose a great many of them. H. S. W.—la. Canna roots should be lifted when moderately dry. Be sure to leave a fair amount of so'il on the clumps. They can be kept in fine condition on shelves in a potato cellar which will just ex- clude the frost. If the roots are bare, throw some loam over them. Many growers prefer to keep them in sheds which contain some fire heat; others put them below the benches in greenhouses where they are free from drip. In the latter case they must be elevated from the ground. Anything clear of actual freezing will winter cannas successfully, but an ideal temperature would be 40 to 45 degrees at night, with a dry atmos- phere. Much fire heat will cause shrivel- ing, so do not store the roots nenr the boilers. Look at the roots occasionally during the winter .and remove any moldy portions. Redcliff.
