He was unanimously confirmed by the Senate two days later. At the ex-piration of his term of office in 1894 he was reappointed by Governor Werts andagain unanimously confirmed by the Senate. He was the Democratic candidatefor Governor of New Jersey in 1895, but, with his party, was defeated. STEVENS Trustee, i8pi- Edwin a. Stevens, second son of Edwin A. Stevens, Founder of theStevens Institute, was born in Philadelphia March 14, 1858. He was educatedat St. Pauls School, Concord, N. from which he entered Princeton, gradu-ating in 1879. He has since then been employed in the management of the Hoboken Land and Improvement Company invarious capacities. In spite of a lack of technical educationhe has been busy mainly with engineering best-known work has been the designingof screw ferry-boats, a type which he originatedand is now much used in this country. Hehas also worked on the designs of high-speedsteam-engines and machine tools. At present heis engaged as consulting engmeer for the Cityof New York in the matter of the constructiono
