Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666), born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium—painted The Market Girl.

Franz Hals (c. 1582–1666) was born in southern Netherlands—what is today Belgium. A Dutch Golden Age painter, Hals is credited as a revolutionary in the field of portraiture. He was particularly known for the way he captured light and atmosphere. This painting by Halls in 1630 is titled The Market Girl. They call her La Hohemienne in Paris. Sheis not a gipsy girl, but a prostitute from the Haarlem Fishmarket. The girl was a favorite studio model. Thinly painted, in simple colors, this is a masterpiece of pigment snapshots.
