The new engineswere to be triple-expansion, developing with a boiler pres-sure of 160 lbs. 5,000 indicated H. P. The efforts of theengineers of the firm were directed toward producing anengine of the greatest simplicity and perfection in all itsparts, so that the result represented by our illustrationsmay be regarded as the best specimen of Italian marineengineering of the present time. The engines are of the usual type for mercantile steam-ers, with three inverted cylinders, the diameters m. (37 in.) for the high-pressure, m. (61 in.) forthe intermediate, and 2 50 m. ( in.) for the low-pres-sure cylinder, the stroke of the pistons being m.(60 in.) for all o( them. The valves are worked by a ig. station the low tension current of conversion. Instead ofJ H. P. transmitted for 37 miles, it is contemplated totransmit 300 H. P. over 115 miles, and over a wire ,. in. indiameter, and at a potential of 30,000 volts. With thesenew methods at our command, the problem of economictransmission of water-powers takes on an entirely newcomplexion, anfl where once the cost of conductors actedas a deterrent to the undertaking of such work, the pres-ent methods relegate their consideration to an inferiorposition. The success of the proposed plant at Frankfortwould, we are certain, open up a new era in electric powertransmission for long distances, and at l^st lead to therealization of the predictions made 10 years ago, that notonly Niagara but every other available water-power wouldbe utilized through the medium of electricity.
