STENCILLING. 221 is a good way of decorating it, and small patterns can bestencilled on the wall in addition—powdered over the wall,as it is termed. In stencilling in oil you must mix up your colours, thinningthem to the consistency of thick cream. The main pointto be observed in using stencils is to get the impressionssharp. The colour has a slight tendency to work under-neath the plates and this is especially the case if the colourbe used too thinly. The brushes are shortin the hair and madeexpressly for the pur-pose. Do not fillthem too full, but bytaking a little colourand knocking thebrush on the paletteto distribute it over. Be very careful not to get too much water or turpentine in the brushes, or disasterwill follow. It is possible to slightly vary the tints used instead ofgetting each impression mechanically the same. The bestway to effect this is to have the tinting colours in batcheson the palette and a lot of white also ; you can then takea little of the colour in the brush, and just dip it also in the the brush you avoidthe danger of thecolour spreading andso producing ablurred impression.
