The Use of the Snarling-Iron.—The cupis held in position with the left hand, andthe long arm of the snarling-iron strucksmartly with the hammer at A. Thiscauses the point of the snarler to strikeagainst the inner side of the cup withnearly the same force as the original S9 Hammer blow. This method is employed where-Work ever it is impossible, owing to the depthof the cup or bowl, to use the hammeror a tracing tool, and with care almostany amount of relief can be as the metal is not supported bypitch, which not only deadens the forceof the blow but holds the metal upagainst the blow, much less force mustbe employed, and the operation of raisingmust be more gradual.
